Save Our Schools Non-Profit Organisation Celebrates Women’s Day in Kraaifontein with Dignity Drive
Cape Town, August 12, 2022 – In celebration of National Women’s Day, Cape Town based non-profit organisation, Save Our Schools hosted a dignity drive at Masibambane Secondary School in Kraaifontein. The dignity drive sought to educate and inform 150 school girls on appropriate menstrual hygiene, and draw attention to the period poverty crisis many South African girls are experiencing.
The educational drive welcomed valuable guest speakers from the City of Cape Town, including Health Officer Duran Le Roux, who shed light on the importance of adequate hygiene-management practices of women during their menstruation. Yibanathi Nathi Mmangweni, a valuable member of the Bloekombos community and ward councillor assistant gave an inspirational speech on women’s resilience in the face of adversity.
The event brought about awareness to the alarming state of period poverty in South Africa, evident in the 4 million school girls who do not have access to, or cannot afford to purchase sanitary products. As such, the activation saw 150 school girls from Masibambane Secondary School receive dignity packs, comprising of pads, tampons, soap, a toothbrush and other WASH items generously sponsored by Lil-Lets, Menstruation Foundation, Mount Clair Dental, PEP and Shoprite, in an effort to address the global sanitation issue.
The National Women’s Day activation also saw the brands Sorbet Waterfront and Primedia Broadcasting contribute to the meaningful initiative. Money raised from donations for this initiative will contribute towards the S.H.E project (Sanitation, Health and Education), which aims to empower females by investing in communities.
