We are a Christian school with a Methodist ethos that integrates spirituality into daily school life. Our pupils, who represent many different denominations, participate in weekly chapel services and have many opportunities for fellowship, worship and service. We hold special chapel services throughout the year to celebrate Christian holidays, such as Easter and Christmas. We welcome pupils of all faiths.
Academics take centre stage, focusing on critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, self-expression and inquiry. Our academic programme is examination driven and comprises an extensive range of subjects, accommodating pupils with wide-ranging abilities and interests. Our pupils write the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) National Senior Certificate. We are proud to consistently achieve 100% pass rate. Every year, we exceed the IEB percentage for entrance into university and celebrate pupils who achieve subject results in the top one percent of all IEB candidates.
Epworth is home from home to approximately half of our pupil body. We offer weekly, termly and overnight boarding to all pupils in Grades 8 to 12. Our aim is to create an environment where every single boarder feels safe, happy and heard. Boarders are cared for on a daily basis by live-in housemothers and boarder mistresses (usually senior university students). Wholesome, nutritionally balanced meals are planned and prepared by a professional catering company. Pupils have access to an app whereby they order their lunch and dinner, selecting from three different options. Special dietary needs are accommodated within reason. Boarders have access to a well-resourced sanitorium that is run by qualified nursing sisters who are on duty 24 hours a day. Activities and excursions, on and off the campus, are planned for those staying at school over weekends.
The performing arts: music, dance and drama feature prominently at Epworth. Music is offered as a subject from Grades 8 to 12. All Grade 8 and 9 pupils, regardless of their musical background, are given the opportunity to have group lessons in either piano, clarinet or voice. Individual and group music lessons are offered with specialist vocal and instrumental teachers. Our music department has two choirs, a string ensemble, a jazz band and three marimba bands. The school has a junior and a senior development dance company as well as the LiveArt Dance. Theatre productions – in the form of a musical or conventional play – feature on the school's calendar of annual events. Dramatic arts also form part of the Grade 8 and 9 curriculum as well as the Grade 12 subject package.
Sport forms an integral part of life for every Epworth pupil. The skills developed and honed on the sports field contribute positively to a holistic and balanced education. We embrace mass participation while championing sporting success, ensuring that we accommodate each pupil’s ability and aspiration. Our sports programmes cater equally for beginners, intermediate and advanced athletes. We have a core of experienced and highly qualified sports staff, complemented by coaches who are specialists in their disciplines. Each year, we celebrate pupils who are selected for national, provincial and regional sports teams.
We offer fellowships (based on financial need and merit in one or more areas, including academics, sport and performing arts) to pupils entering at the Grade 8 level.
