The High School for Girls, Potchefstroom is a “Christian ethos” school which welcomes pupils from different cultures, religions, races and languages.
The High School for Girls’ family is especially proud of her annual academic prowess. Our results are exceptional, year after year. Girls High has excellent resources, to prepare and encourage young ladies who embrace independent, critical and creative decision-making. Remedial and Enrichment Programmes are in place to cater to our learners’ individual needs. Our Grade 9s write an interest and aptitude test to identify a tailored choice of subjects for Grades 10 to 12. Our educators are professional, and leaders in their fields. They use a growth mind-set, embrace a blended learning approach, with the help of technology, and understand the nuances of teaching and relating to girls.
As a boarder, hostel will become your daughter’s second home, which is why at Girls High, we believe that boarding should complement, not replace family life. Our hostels are more than just places in which our girls live. Here, characters are formed and lifelong friendships are born and nourished in a safe, stable, diverse and warm environment. As boarders, our girls are able to concentrate on their academic studies and simultaneously take full advantage of participating in our enriching Co-Curricular Programme. Through boarding, our girls are provided with the tools to learn how to be more independent, resilient, considerate and ready to face life after school. There is nowhere better than Girls High to do that! Here, boarding-life is underpinned by our school’s values – Pride, Respect, Integrity, Diligence and Empathy. Thus, the fullness of the boarding experience fosters our girls’ development into becoming caring, communicative and engaged young women who, at every turn, enrich the world they enter. Living on campus allows the girls the opportunity to participate in any number of sport, cultural and service-related activities. Boarders who participate in non-school activities are driven to and from these activities. On weekends, boarders are transported to and from Gauteng by a reputable bus company. Each of our four hostels is managed by a Senior Housemistress (SHM) and four Housemistresses (HM), all of whom live on site. The Senior Housemistresses are responsible for boarders’ day-to-day routine and overall well-being. All our residential staff members are caring individuals who endeavour to make our girls feel comfortable about their boarding choice.
“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” – Mahatma Gandhi Deeply rooted in Girls High’s history, is a culture of caring and sense of social responsibility, including: Interact Blood donation Recycling First Aid Mandela Week As a gesture of goodwill and appreciation, the girls of Girls High knitted and sent socks and gloves to the South African soldiers conscripted to fight in the Second World War. After the war knitting became a Girls High tradition. Each girl is required to knit strips every year, which are sewn together to create blankets that are then given to different charity organisations. Small change is also collected every Friday morning. At the end of the year, organisations that are in need are identified and the items bought with the money collected are handed over to them at our annual Children’s Day celebration. The end of a Girls High girl’s journey is marked by a final act of service when she donates her school shoes on the day of her last Matric exam.
Every activity takes place on campus, which includes an astro turf, heated swimming pool and fully-equipped gym and Wellness Centre. This conveniently eliminates tiresome journeys in and around town. Learners who participate in non-school activities such as Cycling, Equestrian, Underwater Hockey, Dance and Music are given full recognition for their achievements. Sport and cultural teams participate annually at the National All Girls Festival. This festival brings together over a 1000 girls from more than 20 girls schools across the country, and creates opportunities for learning, networking and healthy competition.
