CUT is the foremost higher education institution in the heartland of South Africa. The education university has two campuses – one in Bloemfontein, the judicial capital of South Africa, and one in Welkom, in the heart of the Free State goldfields. The two campuses offer education opportunities in a number of technological fields, including science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM); management sciences; humanities; and education.

The university (then still known as the “Technikon Free State”) opened its doors in 1981, with 285 students enrolled in mainly secretarial, art and design programmes.  Today, the institution boasts more than 21 000 students who have decided to make CUT their academic partner in earning a qualification and gaining appropriate work-integrated learning to equip and prepare them for professional practice. With the restructuring of the higher education landscape in 2004, CUT embraced its new status as a university of technology (UoT), positioning itself to succeed as such.   The qualifications on offer reside in four faculties, namely Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences; Faculty of Humanities; Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (IT); and Faculty of Management Sciences.  The university offers certificates and diplomas at undergraduate level, as well as advanced diplomas, postgraduate diplomas at honours level, and master’s and doctoral degrees in order to increase the production of world-class postgraduate programmes and high-quality outputs for research.

CUT’s vision is to be “a leading African University of Technology, shaping the future through innovation.”

The mandate of a University of Technology in South Africa is essentially to create skillful and responsible citizens.

The National Development Plan 2030 (NDP) notes that Higher Education is “the major driver of information and knowledge systems that contribute to economic development”. But it is “also important for good citizenship and for enriching and diversifying people’s lives” (NPC 2012:317).

The White Paper for Post-School Education and Training states that all universities are expected to have a clearly defined mandate within the system; to offer high-quality undergraduate education; to engage in “some level and type of research”; to address the imperatives of equity and social justice; and to interface with TVET and other vocational colleges, SETAs, employers, labour and other stakeholders (DHET 2013:30).

At a CUT planning Lekgotla in March 2020, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Henk de Jager, reminded the meeting of the following purposes of a University:

  • Creating new generations of intellectuals.
  • Addressing inequality through social mobility.
  • Producing new knowledge about humanity and the universe.
  • Applying knowledge and solving problems.
  • Seeing the city or community as a site of engagement and bringing research and innovation to bear on improving the quality of life in the city, region, province, country.
  • Building competitive local and national economies.
  • Shaping and contributing to nation-building projects.
  • Addressing deep socio-economic inequalities.
  • Addressing the national social justice agenda through research and teaching.

Promising sportsmen and sportswomen have over the years studied at CUT and become national or even international heroes. Os Durant, André Venter and Zola Budd are all CUT Alumni! Sport bursaries are awarded to promising sportsmen and sportswomen according to merit. Such bursaries are only awarded to individuals who participate in league sport in the name of CUT.

bursary is a form of financial assistance given to a student for further study or training. Bursaries may differ in terms of an amount of money and duration. Students are selected according to various criteria set by donors, which could include academic merit and financial need. Some bursaries require that students sign a contract to enter the employment of the donor after graduation.

The scholarship amount is normally based on outstanding academic achievement. Scholarships do not normally require the recipient to repay the scholarship and usually, have no employment conditions attached.

Tips: How to apply for a Bursary/Scholarship

  • Read the Bursary Brochure and find the bursaries that suit your needs.
  • Check the closing dates for applications.
  • Apply directly to the person/company specified.
  • Apply for more than one bursary and make sure that you meet the requirements.
  • Explore other ways of financing your studies in the event of the bursary application being unsuccessful.
