Our University was formed in 2004 following the merger of three technikons. Our merger aimed at redressing the inequalities of the past by providing access to all our communities and an academic home for all our students. In that short time, we have grown into the largest contact University in South Africa, with seven faculties offering programmes in science, engineering and technology, business and management, education, humanities and the arts. We have been ranked by Times Higher Education (THE) in 2018 as one of the top 1000 universities globally and our programmes in engineering in the top 300. THE has also ranked us eighth in South Africa. In 2017, University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) ranked us as the number one University of Technology in Africa.

While the primary function of TUT is academic, the value of the holistic development of students and establishing a culture of participation and competition is central to the institution’s focus on the well-being of students.
TUT Sport contributes in building a strong TUT brand and the University’s sportsmen and women, including coaches and administrators, annually represent the country at national and international competitions.
The core business and mandate of the Directorate of Financial Aid is to manage and administer various student funding opportunities for deserving students according to sponsor specific requirements. Our goal is to ensure that eligible students have access to these funds at all our campuses. We aim to allocate the funds through a transparent and equitable application and assessment process.
Each year, we assist almost 30 000 TUT students with more than R1.4 billion in financial assistance. If you’re not one of them, you should be doing whatever is necessary to get the financial support.
